Earl L. Vandermeulen High School received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) School of Excellence Award. This recognition is given to the schools where at least 75 percent of varsity teams qualify as scholar-athlete teams, an accolade that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School achieves through the exemplary academic performance of its student-athletes.

To qualify as a scholar athlete team, 75 percent of the team roster must maintain a GPA of 90 or above. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School met and exceeded the standard across all varsity sports seasons during the academic year. In the fall, 9 out of 10 varsity teams achieved scholar-athlete status, followed by a remarkable achievement in the winter season where all 9 varsity teams earned the scholar-athlete designation. The trend continued into the spring season, with all 7 varsity teams meeting the rigorous academic criteria set by the NYSPHSAA.

The NYSPHSAA School of Excellence Award recognizes schools that excel in athletic competition and prioritize academic achievement and personal growth among student-athletes. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s consistent and outstanding performance in this regard highlights the school’s dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel in both academics and athletics.

We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes and their commitment to excellence both on and off the field, said Adam Sherrard, Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing. This recognition is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the supportive environment fostered here at Port Jefferson High School.
