Schools throughout the Port Jefferson School District recently participated in a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse viewing event.
The solar eclipse viewing event was truly remarkable and exemplified the spirit of scientific curiosity and community within our district, remarked Jessica Schmettan, Superintendent of Schools. “We are thrilled to have provided such a memorable and educational experience for our students and staff, as well as our younger learners at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School.
At Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, the Science Olympiad Team invited high school and middle school students to gather to observe the celestial phenomenon after school hours, witnessing approximately 88 percent totality at 3:26 p.m. in Port Jefferson. Accompanied by dedicated members of the Science Olympiad, united to experience this awe-inspiring spectacle. Understanding the importance of safety, the Science Olympiad Team procured solar eclipse safety glasses for all high school, and middle school students and staff, ensuring a risk-free enjoyment of the eclipse's splendor. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and wonder as students and staff marveled at the beauty of the solar eclipse.
Moreover, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students actively participated in various classroom lessons and activities centered around the solar eclipse. They were also invited to join the viewing event, equipped with protective eyewear, allowing them to safely partake in this extraordinary event. This event not only provided a unique educational opportunity but also fostered a sense of community throughout the schools. The shared experience of witnessing the wonders of the universe brought individuals closer together, creating lasting memories and sparking curiosity.
