One Book, One School Project at PJMS
The English Department at Port Jefferson Middle School is proud to launch another One Book, One School project! This year’s theme is ‘raise your voice against bullying’.
From May 14 – May 24, Port Jefferson Middle School students, teachers, and support staff members will be engaged in reading Bystander, by James Preller. The story takes place at a fictional school on Long Island. The characters face the adolescent struggles of wanting to be accepted, recognizing when someone is being bullied, deciding to remain silent or speak up, and facing the consequences of their decisions.
It is our hope that students will recognize the power of the silent majority when they raise their own voices against bullying. School displays will highlight figures in society who have made the decision to speak up. Students will explore the themes of the book during their English classes and we hope many spontaneous conversations will occur as our entire school community engages with this book. Students will participate in activities such as: workshops, character education projects, text analysis, vocabulary study, identifying significant quotes, and a school-wide read-in.
A book is better when you share it!

Personnel Announcement - High School Principal
Personnel Announcement
At the May 8, 2012 regular business meeting of the Board of Education, Dr. Matthew Murphy was unanimously appointed to be the new principal of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School effective July 1.
Dr. Murphy comes to Port Jefferson from the Hauppauge School District, where he served for five years as the K-12 Director of Math. During his time in Hauppauge, Dr. Murphy has been instrumental in the implementation of new curriculum aligned with the Common Core standards as well as movement toward International Baccalaureate (IB) certification.
Prior to his work in Hauppauge, Dr. Murphy served as both the Director of Math and Science and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in the South Country Central School District.
Dr. Murphy’s teaching experience took place in the Smithtown School District. In addition to his certification in School District Administration, Dr. Murphy is certified in Mathematics, Physics and General Science.
Dr. Murphy obtained his doctorate in Educational Administration, Leadership and Technology from Dowling College in 2009. After his appointment was made official last night, Dr. Murphy addressed the Board of Education and community by saying, “I thank the Superintendent and the Board for this opportunity. I look forward to helping to continue the standard of excellence that the Port Jefferson School District is known for.”
Dr. Murphy will have the opportunity to spend some time with Mrs. Cirnigliaro to ensure a smooth transition as our year draws to a close. As the fall approaches, there will be opportunities for parents, students and the community to meet our new High School Principal.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Murphy to our leadership team.
Sincerely,
Kenneth R. Bossert, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
