PORT JEFFERSON, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2024)—Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s 10th graders participated in a hands-on educational experience designed to promote safe driving practices. Students traveled to Safety Town in Holtsville, NY, to engage in the Teen Driver Safety program, which teaches critical driving safety strategies while raising awareness of the dangers associated with distracted and impaired driving.

During the field trip, students met with Highway Patrol Officers who discussed key topics related to road safety, including real-life examples of tragic accidents caused by unsafe driving behaviors, such as texting while driving and driving under the influence. The officers provided valuable insights into how such tragedies could have been prevented by adhering to basic safety protocols.

In addition to these informative discussions, students put their knowledge to the test by using go-karts to maneuver through the Safety Town course. This hands-on activity allowed them to practice the safe driving strategies they had just learned in a controlled, yet realistic, setting. Students navigated the course while being mindful of traffic signs, speed limits, and other essential driving rules, reinforcing the importance of responsible driving.

This field trip provided a valuable learning experience for the students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to become safer drivers in the future.
