Port Jefferson School District recently participated in Start With Hello Week, a national initiative of the Sandy Hook Promise, to foster a sense of belonging and strengthen student social connections.
Throughout the week, students engaged in a variety of activities designed to promote inclusivity and empathy within the school community. Highlights included a welcoming photo booth where students captured memories while expressing their support for one another, as well as conversation cards that encouraged meaningful dialogues among peers.
In addition, students wrote letters to trusted adults, reinforcing the importance of communication and support networks. They also took the Start With Hello pledge, committing to actions that promote kindness and connection.
“This week was a wonderful opportunity for our students to come together and reflect on the importance of inclusivity and friendship,” said Jessica Schmettan, Superintendent of Schools. “We are proud to be part of a movement that emphasizes empathy and support among peers.”
The Start With Hello initiative aligns with Port Jefferson’s commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students, ensuring that everyone feels valued and included. By participating in this initiative, the school continues to strengthen its dedication to nurturing a positive and supportive community.
