The Port Jefferson School District celebrated its Wall of Fame induction ceremony, honoring distinguished alumni who have made significant contributions to their fields and communities. The event commenced with a tour of the high school, leading to the unveiling of honoree plaques in the high school library, where students introduced the inductees and shared their inspiring stories.

This year’s honorees are Janet Slingerland-Hammond, Class of 1987, and Frederick D. Schaufeld, Class of 1977. Both exemplify the spirit of excellence that the Port Jefferson School District seeks to instill in its students.

Janet Slingerland-Hammond, the valedictorian of the Class of 1987, pursued her passion for engineering, receiving a scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned her degree in electrical engineering. She advanced her education through the Edison program at General Electric and obtained her master’s degree from Drexel University. After 15 years in the engineering field, Janet turned her talents to writing and has since published numerous children’s books that engage young readers— particularly in STEM and history.

Frederick D. Schaufeld, a graduate of the Class of 1977, was a successful venture capital investor, sports team owner, philanthropist, and patent holder. After graduating from Lehigh University with a major in government studies, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and the Horatio Alger award. Fred is actively involved in numerous organizations dedicated to education, health, environmental causes, and the arts, and serves on the boards of Fight for Children and the Wolf Trap Foundation while chairing the Inova Foundation.

Following the plaque unveiling, attendees enjoyed a celebratory lunch in the high school library, allowing students and faculty to connect with the honorees and reflect on their impactful journeys. “We are incredibly proud of our alumni and their contributions to society,” said Jessica Schmettan, Superintendent of Schools. “The Wall of Fame serves as a reminder to our students of the possibilities that lie ahead and the importance of pursuing their passions.”

The Port Jefferson School District looks forward to continuing this tradition, honoring more alumni who inspire current and future generations.
