Bond – May 2023

Board of Education Approves Resolution for Revised Bond Vote

The Port Jefferson School District Board of Education approved a resolution for proposed capital bond projects at its March 14 Board of Education meeting. A community vote on the projects will take place as a separate proposition with the annual budget vote and trustee election on May 16.

The proposal, which has been reduced in scope and cost from the December 2022 vote, includes a focus on key infrastructure and programmatic needs. These include heating and cooling system upgrades at the high school ($3.9 million); the music portable demolition and renovations ($3.4 million); locker rooms, nurse office, team rooms, trainer rooms and Wellfit room upgrades ($6.2 million); and Makerspace and technical education relocation and upgrades ($2.4 million) for a total of $15.9 million. A key focus of the renovations to the music areas and physical education spaces surrounds safety. If approved, these projects will bring all students into the main building and eliminate the need for them to travel to external structures during the school day.

“We have critical needs throughout our buildings that need to be addressed,” Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan said. “This bond is imperative in moving forward in planning for the future education of our students.”

The bond vote will take place during the annual budget on Tuesday, May 16 from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School cafeteria. Details about the proposed bond is available on the District website. Please visit www.portjeffschools.org/bond/home
