The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2023 received their diplomas during the 129th commencement exercises on June 23.
The senior class was welcomed into the auditorium by the high school string orchestra with Dr. Michael Caravello conducting “Pomp and Circumstance.” The festive evening continued with the traditional Color Guard presented by members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department while parents, siblings, friends, teachers, administrators and Board of Education members applauded the most recent alumni of the school district.
Principal John Ruggero welcomed those in attendance and Student Organization President Lola Idir led the Pledge of Allegiance. They were followed by the national anthem performed by the string orchestra and congratulatory words from Student Organization President Amy Whitman. Parent Dr. Frank Andriani (father to Frank Andriani) gave a heartfelt parent address and praised the district for providing so many opportunities for students to be ready to take on the world once they graduate.
Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan then addressed the Class of 2023 and shared her pride in their accomplishments while encouraging them each to pursue a successful future. Class President Alexa Ayotte presented the traditional class gift, the planting of a tree to memorialize several students who have died in the past few years and sharing the tree’s growth as a symbol of their legacy in Port Jefferson.
Valedictorian Olivia Schlegel shared kind words with her fellow graduates and referred to her long-time idol Taylor Swift as inspiration for greeting each day with renewed enthusiasm no matter the circumstances. Olivia shared memories with her fellow classmates of classroom successes, field trip fun, and the camaraderie and friendships formed by those who started kindergarten in Port Jefferson and those who joined the district later in their primary education years.
Mr. Ruggero then presented the Class of 2023 to Superintendent Schmettan and Board of Education president Ellen Boehm. Each student walked to the podium for their diploma while Mr. Ruggero highlighted their personal achievements and postgraduation plans. The students then stood and tossed their caps in the air in celebration of becoming the newest graduates of the high school.
From the entire Port Jefferson School District and community, congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2023.
