Impressive Placement at Latin Certamen!

Port Jeff students competed in a Latin Certamen with students from schools across Nassau and Suffolk County at Stony Brook University on March 26.

The fast-paced Latin contest tests students’ knowledge of Latin grammar, vocabulary, word derivations, Roman life, history, mythology and literature. The middle school and high school students competed on the level of Latin in which they are enrolled.

The district had one eighth-grade team compete at Level I, two ninth-grade teams compete at Level II, two tenth-grade teams compete at Level III, and two teams compete at the Advanced Level. The students had impressive placements throughout the competition.

Coached by Latin teacher Anne Algieri, the Port Jefferson teams who placed at this year’s Certamen are: first place, Level One Team - Luke Dickhuth, Teppei Fukuto, Benjamin Perez-Flesler and Olivia Schlegel; first place, Level Two Team A - Annie Maier, Andrew Patterson, Stephano Rabeno and Kate Sommerstad; third place, Level Two Team B - Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Hugo Onghai, Caelan Schretzmayer and Hunter Volpi; first place, Level Three Team A - Aaron Held, Mattea Rabeno, Grant Samara and Peggy Yin; second place, Level Three Team B - Liam Gameng, Ameen Khan, Michela Rabeno and Lucas Welinder; first place, Advanced Level Team A - Katie Ambrozy, David Rotunno, Ava Schully and Annalisa Welinder.
