Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Katherine Ranjbar attended the 25th International Symposium on Spin Physics recently held at the Durham Convention Center in Durham, North Carolina.

Katherine presented her research poster, “Impact of Imperfection Spin Resonance Strength on Depolarization in RHIC,” to physicists, experts and conference participants from around the world. RHIC (Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) is used to study the fundamental properties of matter and is the only machine that can collide beams of polarized protons to investigate the “missing” spin of the proton. Katherine attended the conference with her father, Dr. Vahid Ranjbar, a physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
