‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.’

The well-known quote by Mahatma Gandhi was the backdrop of a presentation by Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Brian Walker at the Oct. 10 Board of Education meeting. Mr. Walker presented an overview of happenings at the school largely focused on service, including the ALS Ride for Life, the Senior Citizen Thanksgiving luncheon, veteran card writing events, GSA candle sales to help the Neighborhood House of Long Island and, most recently, the thoughtful messages of hope and kindness from students in Heather Marshak’s high school French classes to French-speaking students in the Farmingdale School District to honor them in their time of grief. Mr. Walker was also pleased to honor eighth grader Max Gordon for his altruistic endeavor. Max has been collecting gently used sports equipment for the nonprofit organization Game Changers, who collect and distribute these items to kids in need both locally and globally.
