Earl L. Vandermeulen High School 10th Grader Sean Grossman Launches Successful Culper Day 5K

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School is proud to announce that 10th grader Sean Grossman has successfully created and organized the first annual Culper Spy Day 5K. This event blended Sean’s passion for history and running. The event, held on September 8, 2024, attracted over 300 participants and showcased a beautiful 5K course that passed numerous historic sites related to the Culper Ring, a famous network of spies that operated during the British occupation of New York City during the American Revolutionary War.

Sean has a fascination with historical preservation and a love of athletics. The 5K was conceived to honor Setauket's local history while promoting fitness and community involvement. His hard work and dedication led to the creation of a well-organized and memorable event, which raised thousands of dollars for the educational programs of the Three Village Historical Society.

The picturesque five-kilometer route took participants through several significant locations connected to the Culper Spy Ring, adding an educational element to the event and enriching the experience for all involved. The course was designed to highlight the historical richness of the region while challenging runners with a rewarding athletic experience.

Members of Port Jefferson’s Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams, along with Coach Cosci, participated in the event, adding to its community spirit. Notable finishers included Lucas Sweeney, Jayden DiGregori, Jameson Roeber, and Gwen Connelly, who all earned medals for their impressive

The funds raised through the event will support various educational initiatives and programs managed by the Three Village Historical Society, furthering its mission to preserve and promote the local heritage. Sean’s dedication and leadership are a testament to the exceptional talents and passions that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students bring to the community. The success of the First Annual Culper Spy Day 5K sets a high standard for future events and reflects the vibrant spirit of our student body.
