Students in the High School’s Investment Club are participating in two competitions – the school’s own and the Long Island Stock Market. Headed by high school language teacher and club adviser Mr. Robert Farenga, the Long Island competition is a program run by The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association Foundation, where students work in groups competing against schools across the region. The Port Jefferson competition involves students individually competing against fellow students and staff within the district. For both competitions, students manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, impact investments and cash. “Students are developing unique investment strategies connecting their knowledge of math, finance, new technology, popular trends, current events and global awareness,” Mr. Farenga said of the skills that the approximately 40 members of the club are learning and helping to keep students Luke Dickhuth, Ameen Khan, Safiy Khan, Jonah Pflaster and Rishabh Singh at a consistent high ranking in the SIFMA Foundation competition.
