Eleven students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School recently participated and placed as high scorers in the annual Suffolk County Math Teachers’ Association competition.

According to math teacher and math team adviser Dennis Christofor, the students excelled in their sections of competition, which is based on the state mathematics curriculum of each grade or course level.

High school students Nicholas DeDonato, David Lawler, William Wu, Reid Biondo and Kyle Onghai were the school’s winners in geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus, calculus and advanced calculus, respectively. William Wu also placed fourth in Suffolk County in pre-calculus.

Eighth grader Michael Melikyan was the middle school winner in the Level 1 category and Carman Stanton was the school winner in the seventh grade section. Sixth grade students Isabelle Chen was the middle school winner and tied for second place in all of Suffolk County, Alice Snyder tied for third place in the county and Emily Snyder and Mark Marinescu tied each other for fourth place.
