The Port Jefferson School District is proud to recognize Kyra Sommerstad and Kate Sommerstad for their achievements at the recent New York State Swim Championships.

In addition to their commitment to academics, the sisters are independent swimmers for Port Jefferson who both have been swimming competitively for seven years with the Three Village Swim Club.

Kyra, a junior, started swimming at the high school level when she was in 8th grade. She is a seven-time Suffolk County champion and has qualified at the state level four times in multiple events. She won the 200-individual medley and placed 2nd in the 100-backstroke at the 2018 state championship, was named a 2017-18 Scholastic All-America team member, a competitive accomplishment with high academic requirements to swim at the national level.

This is the first year for freshman Kate to swim at the high school level. She placed 2nd in the 500-freestyle and 7th in the 100-backstroke at the 2018 Suffolk County Championships, which qualified her for the state level. There, she qualified for the 500-freestyle and made it to the finals and placed 21st in the 100-backstroke.
