Environmental Experiential Lessons
Taking a school field trip is often an enhancement to classroom studies
and high school students had an opportunity to do just that when they
climbed aboard an actual research vessel in Shinnecock Bay. Students
from Marine Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Living Environment
classes, along with science teacher Jonathan Maletta, spent a recent day
with scientists from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at
Stony Brook University. The SoMAS scientists provided a wealth of
information during the unique voyage. Students learned about water
quality parameters, such as dissolved oxygen content and turbidity, in
the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. They also sampled marine sediment to
understand the geologic features of the bay.
