The high school’s athletic program has another reason to be proud: All spring varsity teams have been named Scholar-Athlete teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The news is even more impressive because all of the district’s varsity teams for the 2017-18 school year have been awarded Scholar-Athlete recognition. To receive this honor, a sports team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90.

The culmination of both honors means that Earl L. Vandermeulen will be named a 2018 School of Distinction by the NYSPHSAA. Across the state, only about 20 schools are given this honor, and in Section XI only four schools were recognized as a School of Distinction last year.

“This honor clearly demonstrates the ability of all of our student-athletes to show tremendous dedication to their academics, while balancing a busy athletic schedule,” said Dr. Danielle Turner, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “This is a direct reflection of the commitment and support of our district administration, teachers, coaches and community as a whole.”
