Senior Tatum Hurney was recognized as a first-place winner in the SkillsUSA state competition, recently held in Syracuse, New York.

Tatum competed in the Restaurant Service competition, where she was judged on her professionalism, courtesy, and technical and verbal skills. She also excelled in “front of the house” skills, including reservation procedures, greeting customers, explaining menu choices, and preparation and presentation of the customer’s check.

Tatum, a student in the Culinary Arts program at the Wilson Technical Center in Oakdale, said, “I am so proud that I accomplished this. I am happy that Ms. Galvin [high school guidance counselor] steered me toward this program and plans for the future.”

Tatum is looking to continue her education in the culinary arts and hopes to attend Johnson & Wales University to earn a bachelor degree.
