Students in Steve Orlowski’s class at the elementary school have been studying maps and continents and had a special visitor who was able to put geography in perspective for them.

Stationed for the past two years in Japan as a member of the United State Navy, Chief David Orlowski, their teacher’s brother, had business to attend to in Washington, DC and took some time to visit his family and the students in Port Jefferson.

Chief Orlowski shared his experiences about living abroad, daily life on a ship and the job of a military person.

Students asked questions about what he eats in Japan, how he is able to speak with people there and what he does on a daily basis. They also learned that the military is not always at war, and that the majority of their time is spent patrolling foreign waters and maintaining equipment.
