Eighth-grader Emily Hearney was honored by the Board of Education for her initiative and fortitude in spearheading a campaign to show solidarity among the students of Port Jefferson and Stoneman Douglas High School, where her cousin is a junior.

Emily solicited the help of teacher Allison Giannusa, Student Government adviser, and mobilized her peers to create T-shirts for a 17-minute event where students engaged in civic action and paused to remember and honor those who lost their lives.

“Emily was driven to action because of the amazing person and leader that she is,” Principal Dr. Robert Neidig said. “Her exemplary efforts are a testament to her character and her willingness to contribute to her school and community.”
