A new sound is emerging from the music classrooms at the Elementary School, where fifth-grade students are learning to play the ukulele under the leadership of music teacher Lisa Scrom.

The students are learning about chord progressions and strumming patterns to play along with a variety of pop and folk songs. Aligned with the New York State learning standards, the lessons also include how to read tablature, music theory, chord and song structure and improvisation.

“All the students really enjoy learning to play the ukulele and many families have purchased their own so the children can continue their learning at home, which is really exciting,” said Scrom. “They are all actively involved during each lesson, collaborating with each other to learn a variety of songs.”
