Fifth-grade student Isabelle Chen took the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School title of top speller after correctly spelling “massacres.” She will now compete in the 2018 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on Feb. 4.

Isabelle, who was the school’s second place winner last year, studied a variety of words and definitions to be competition-ready. She will represent the district at Hofstra on Feb. 4 with a written test and if she is one of the top scorers, will be invited back the following week for the traditional oral spell down. From there, winners move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place in Washington D.C. later in the spring.

“We’re all proud of her accomplishment,” said her teacher Christine Wicks. “We wish her the best of luck at the next step of the competition.”
