Edna Louise Elementary School students learned about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, as they welcomed special guest speaker Chris Pendergast who has been living with the illness for more than 20 years.

In addition to sharing the history of the progressive, neurodegenerative disease and his personal journey from diagnosis to founding the ALS Ride for Life Campaign to raising awareness and funds for research to find a cure, Pendergast engaged the students with inspirational words of hope and encouragement in meeting any of life’s challenges.

Using an augmentative communication device — an alphabet board to spell out his thoughts — Pendergast was assisted by his volunteers in “speaking” with the students, sharing in language that was age-appropriate for the elementary grade levels, his positive messages of strength and determination.
