Despite a tough loss during the Class C championship game, the high school girls basketball varsity team will be remembered for making it to the state competition for the first time in Port Jefferson’s history.

The team earned the spot after winning the Long Island and regional championship titles. Their winning streak ended with a buzzer beating 65-63 loss to Watkins Glen at Hudson Valley Community College on March 19.

“They fell just short, but they have changed the basketball culture here in Port Jefferson,” said Danielle Turner, director of physical education, health and athletics. “What they have done as a team and for our community is something that will be talked about for years to come in Port Jefferson.”
