A Lesson in Diversity
To teach seventh-graders about diversity, teachers Monica Consalvo and Deirdre Filippi created a lesson to engage students in the topic.
As part of the lesson, students read a selection of four articles centered around the idea, a mile in our shoes. The articles focused on different perspectives, experiences and included people of varying backgrounds. Students then reflected on the readings by forming talking points that they shared with their classmates.
The lesson culminated with students designing hands that showcased their own uniqueness. The hands will be displayed on the school’s bulletin board with the theme, “We are all one, different, but the same.”
