High school senior Kyra Becker will serve as the voice of her peers this year, as she joins the Port Jefferson Board of Education in the role of student representative.

Kyra, who was appointed by Principal Christine Austen at the end of the 2015-16 school year, will serve as a liaison between students and the Board during the Board’s monthly meetings.

“Kyra is a perfect fit for this position,” said Austen. “She is responsible, displays leadership and is very involved in school activities.”

In addition to serving as a non-voting Board of Education student representative, Kyra is captain of the varsity tennis team, class historian and a leader in her church youth group. Additionally, this winter, she will be participating in a church mission to Africa, where she will help administer medication to AIDS victims. In the past, she assisted in the construction of a home for a family in Mexico.

Kyra, who intends to study business in college next fall, said this new position will further hone her public speaking and communication skills.

“I think this will be a good experience,” she said. “I am very excited.”
