Garden Across the Centuries
Elementary School fourth-graders recently planted a new garden at their school as part of a history lesson on the contributions of various cultures to the development of Long Island and New York.
As part of the hands-on lesson, the students in Kari Costanzo’s class researched plants used by Native Americans, colonists and workers for medicinal purposes and cooking, and then sowed them in the school’s courtyard. Varies planted included juniper, blueberry, coneflower, phlox, comfrey, thyme and dianthus.
