A middle school seventh-grade social studies class won the chance to name one of Beth Stern’s foster cats by raising the most money during a student council fundraiser for Bianca’s Furry Friends. The students, who are in Philip Giannusa’s class, secured the win after raising $403 and named the cat Petey. The name was selected as a tribute to science teacher Pete Burawa, who will be retiring at the end of the school year. In total, the school raised $1,767 for the cause, which aims to create a state-of-the-art feline adoption center at North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington.
