The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of state wrestling champion Matteo DeVincenzo during its meeting on March 8.

Matteo, a senior at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, clinched the New York State championship title on Feb. 27 after defeating his opponent 2-1, giving him a perfect season record and an overall career record of 148-4. He is the second Port Jefferson wrestler to win big at two state championships.

As a junior, Matteo earned the Eastern States crown before moving on to the state tournament, where he earned the bronze medal. Earlier this year, he won the Section XI Division II Championship and was named Champion of Champions.

“Matteo accomplished all this while also maintaining a strong commitment to his academics,” said coach Mike Maletta. “He will leave Port Jefferson as a legend and a shining example of sportsmanship and scholastic achievement.”

Matteo will be attending Princeton University to study business and finance in the fall.
