Wrestling Champion
The high school’s Matteo DeVincenzo has once again claimed a state wrestling championship title. On Feb. 27, the senior won the 126-pound state Division II wrestling title at the NYSPHSAA State Championships, held at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Matteo captured the title after defeating his opponent 2-1, giving him a perfect season record and an overall career record of 148-4. He is the second Port Jefferson wrestler to win big at two state championships.
“Matteo has had an incredible season,” said coach Mike Maletta. “He prevailed and won on Long Island against a formidable opponent.”
As a junior, Matteo earned the Eastern States crown before moving on to the state tournament, where he took the bronze. Earlier this year, he won the Section XI Division II Championship and was named Champion of Champions.
Matteo will be attending Princeton University to study business and finance in the fall.
