Students Recognized for Raising Awareness
The Port Jefferson Board of Education recognized high school juniors Jiwon Woo and Emma Schoepflin on Feb. 23 for working for the past three years to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes within their school.
To date, the pair has raised $500 for the American Diabetes Association through several bake sales and teacher jean days, as well as held awareness days where they decorated their school in blue.
The girls kicked off the effort as freshmen after learning that not many of their peers had an understanding of juvenile diabetes. The initiative was near and dear to the pair, as Jiwon herself has had diabetes since the age of 6.
