The girls varsity basketball team became league co-champions with Mattituck High School after defeating Pierson High School on Feb. 6.

The team secured the win following junior Courtney Lewis’ three-point shot with just 19 seconds left on the clock.

“I am so proud of this great group of girls,” said coach Ed Duddy. “They came together, worked hard and earned this win.”

In addition to the league championship, the young team, consisting entirely of underclassmen, ended the season with three members — Jillian Colucci, Gillian Kenah and Courtney Lewis — named All-League players. Lewis was also designated an All-County player and Suffolk County’s leading scorer by averaging 24 points per game. Additionally, eighth-grader Samantha Ayotte was named Rookie of the Year.

While the team lost its bid to the states after a seed game against Pierson, Coach Duddy has high hopes for next season.

“We are looking forward to next year, when we hopefully have a number of returning and veteran players,” he said.
